SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index Reveals the Rising Cost of Local Invisibility in the Age of AI

SAN DIEGO — Jan. 28, 2026 — SOCi Inc., the agentic workforce built for multi-location visibility across local and AI search, today released its 2026 Local Visibility Index (LVI), revealing how artificial intelligence is collapsing local discovery into a single moment of choice. As AI-powered assistants replace traditional search results with a single recommended answer, visibility is no longer about ranking, but about being chosen.

“AI has collapsed the local decision journey,” said Monica Ho, CMO at SOCi. “Consumers aren’t scrolling through options anymore. They’re asking AI to decide for them, and the cost of invisibility has never been higher. If your brand isn’t optimized for AI search, you’re not just losing rank – you’re removed from consideration entirely at the moment of intent.”

Analyzing more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands, SOCi found that AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity are dramatically more selective than traditional search. ChatGPT recommends just 1.2% of brand locations, compared to an average 35.9% appearance rate in Google’s local 3-Pack, making AI visibility nearly 30 times more selective than traditional local search. This means brands competing in AI-driven discovery face a dramatically narrower window for visibility than ever before.

“The cost of this shift is significant,” said Ho. “In AI-driven discovery, there is no fallback list and no second page. If a brand isn’t selected by an AI assistant, it is effectively invisible at the moment a consumer is ready to decide.”

While AI systems still rely on many of the same fundamentals that have long powered local search like accurate business data, strong reputation signals, and active local engagement, they apply those signals far more aggressively. Inconsistent or incomplete listings reduce AI confidence and can remove brands from consideration entirely. In an AI-driven discovery environment, weak local signals don’t just hurt performance. They create invisibility.

Consumer sentiment has emerged as one of the strongest gating factors for AI visibility – something brands can actively influence. SOCi’s research shows that locations recommended by ChatGPT average 4.3-star ratings, underscoring how heavily AI platforms rely on reviews to assess trust and relevance. As AI collapses the funnel into fewer choices, sentiment increasingly determines which brands are eligible to be recommended at all.

The LVI also reveals that strong traditional local search performance does not guarantee AI visibility. In retail, SOCi found only 45% overlap between the most visible enterprise brands in traditional local search and those most frequently recommended by AI platforms. This reflects how AI assistants synthesize signals across Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook, and brand websites, rewarding brands with consistent, high-quality visibility across ecosystems rather than strength in a single channel.

For the first time, the 2026 LVI introduces AI visibility as a core benchmark alongside search, reputation, and social. The findings make clear that AI has not replaced local marketing fundamentals but has amplified them. Brands that invest in accurate data, strong sentiment, and ongoing local engagement across the most visited and trusted consumer channels will be best positioned to compete in a world where discovery increasingly depends on being selected, not just found.

Fragmented journeys, fading loyalty, and rising trust in social platforms are reshaping how brands win attention

SAN DIEGO — June 25, 2025 — The path to purchase has splintered, and Gen Z is in the driver’s seat. According to SOCi’s 2025 Consumer Behavior Index (CBI), younger consumers are building a new model of local discovery fueled by platform-hopping, peer validation, and real-time research. 

Where previous generations might have turned to a single search engine or mapping app, Gen Z navigates a mosaic of micro-decisions. Their journey could begin on TikTok, continue through Reddit threads or Yelp reviews, and culminate in a Google Maps search. The traditional front door has been replaced by a dozen digital entry points, each one shaping how a brand is perceived.

“Legacy marketing models weren’t built for today’s buyer,” said Monica Ho, CMO of SOCi. “Gen Z is redefining what discovery looks like; they don’t follow a path, they create one. Brands that can’t meet them across platforms with authenticity and proof won’t earn their trust or their business.”

This fragmented approach to search and discovery comes with a reshuffling of trust. While search engines and navigation tools remain widely respected across age groups, Gen Z is far more likely to experiment with newer tools like AI-driven platforms while also leaning into peer-powered content. Yet despite this experimentation, they remain cautious: AI still lags behind in trustworthiness, while user-generated content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit plays a larger role in shaping decisions. 

Brand loyalty is also on the decline. According to the CBI, nearly one-third of consumers aged 18–24, and more than a third of those aged 25–34, report being less loyal to brands than they were a year ago. For the youngest buyers, traditional brand reputation ranks just ninth in importance when making a purchase decision, trailing behind factors like price, quality, convenience, customer reviews, and visual content.

“There’s no single source of truth anymore,” added Ho. “Consumers, especially younger ones, are assembling the full picture themselves, platform by platform. To win their trust, brands must meet them everywhere and prove their value at every turn.”

The CBI survey was conducted between February 19 and February 24, 2025, and included 1,001 adult U.S. respondents distributed evenly across gender, age, and geographic area. SOCi’s Consumer Behavior Index Reveals Consumers Increasingly Turn to TikTok, Instagram, and Real Human Experiences for Validation

SAN DIEGO — June 4, 2025 — SOCi’s 2025 Consumer Behavior Index (CBI) sends a clear warning to CMOs and digital marketing leaders. Discovery has changed, and traditional digital strategies are no longer enough. While 19% of consumers now use generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini to find businesses, a staggering 95% say AI is the least trusted source when it comes to making actual purchase decisions.

“AI may answer the question, but social media earns the trust,” said Monica Ho, CMO at SOCi. “That’s why TikTok, Instagram, and reviews aren’t just content channels. They’re your most critical conversion levers. Brands that fail to show up authentically in these spaces will lose relevance fast.”

Consumers aren’t rejecting AI; they’re verifying it. As AI tools increasingly serve as a starting point for local discovery, consumers are looking to platforms like TikTok and Instagram to validate that what AI suggests is accurate, relevant, and human-backed. This is especially true for Gen Z, where 34% use TikTok and 35% use Instagram to discover new brands. The message is clear: AI may start the journey, but trust is earned through people.

This is not a future problem. This is today’s reality. Consumers now move fluidly between AI tools, social media, and review platforms to validate claims, check brand reputation, and watch videos from real customers before making decisions. Treating these touchpoints as disconnected strategies creates costly blind spots. With Google increasingly surfacing social content in search results, SOCi’s 2024 Local Visibility Index found that brands that lack a social-first presence are leaving millions in potential revenue untapped.

The trust-building doesn’t stop at discovery. Reviews are now the final checkpoint before conversion. An overwhelming 91% of consumers rely on peer-generated content to evaluate local businesses. Among younger audiences, 40% prefer video reviews, and 65% say they are more likely to choose a business that actively responds to reviews. Yet 55% are increasingly skeptical of fake feedback, highlighting that transparency and responsiveness are now business-critical.

Importantly, reviews are not only influential to consumers but also a key signal for AI engines (Damian Rollison, Search Engine Land). Tools like ChatGPT incorporate customer reviews as a foundational input in generating local recommendations. This underscores the dual role reviews now play in building consumer trust and shaping how businesses appear in AI-powered discovery results.

“As the lines between search, social, and reputation blur, brands must double down on transparency, authenticity, and trust across every channel,” said Ho. “Those who showcase real customer experiences, lean into visual content, and engage meaningfully on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and trusted review sites will earn lasting loyalty.”
