What is Obesity?
Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat relative to height. According to the National Institute of Health, a person who is 20% or more his/her ideal weight or has a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 35 is considered “obese.”
What causes Obesity?
Obesity is caused by several factors such as age, gender, genetics, environment, physical activity, psychological factors, illness, and medication.
What is Morbid Obesity?
A person who is 50-100% above normal weight, weighs 100 pounds or more above their ideal weight, or has a BMI of 40 or more is sufficiently overweight and is considered Morbidly Obese.
Morbid Obesity significantly increases your chances of suffering from one or more obesity-related illnesses including:
- High blood pressure
- Hypercholesterolemia
- Diabetes
- Sleep apnea and breathing difficulties
- Back and joint disorders (osteoarthritis)
- Skin irritation (dermatitis)
- Abnormal menstruation
- Depression and other mental illnesses
- Cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, kidney, esophagus and pancreas
